The Shadow Virus is a dangerous, toxic infection named by the Federation which is currently spreading through Quesadilla Island. It takes a form of a black substance called black matter.
Appearance[]
The Shadow Virus is an infection in the form of a black substance. The virus can take over blocks, making them into the black matter; island inhabitants and workers; and create new virus material. As more of the infection has appeared, the rate of it's growth has increased exponentially. This growth has taken form of jagged spikes of black matter coming out of the ground and latching onto uninfected buildings or blocks. It can be broken with a pickaxe, but workers need to wear facemasks around the substance, indicating the matter is harmful to inhale.
History[]
The first known instance of black matter was on Day 159 during the Rescue Mission event, when multiple pillars of black matter appeared around the entrance of the Laboratory Ruins, along with 3 invisible barrier rings, as the islanders tried to make their way in to save the new members in the ruins.
On Day 176, six days after the egg disappearance, black substance showed up at Tubhaus, Roier's castle and Eggxile, along with black chests that contained books with coordinates that led Tubbo, Roier and Slimecicle to discover the maze beneath The Wall.
During the following days, black matter started appearing near areas important to the eggs. Those spots with the Virus also had messages from the eggs to their parents and their most recognizable items as well. At first, it was referred to as black concrete by the island residents. They started theorising that the places the substance appears were visited by the missing eggs who might be stuck in a different dimension and this is a footprint they left. The infection started quickly spreading even in public area, such as spawn and the federation buildings.
On Day 186, moments after Carre was introduced to the island, a giant ring structure of black matter, resembling a spaceship, showed up near Luzu's house. As the residents started investigating it, a Binary Entity showed up.
In the days after, more of these structures started appearing. The grieving and desperate parents went to them, believing anything made out of the dark substance might be connected to their missing egg children. There, they found chests with mysterious, static pictures of the kids and coordinates to certain locations. Those places were loved by the eggs and also became littered with the black matter when the parents found them following the coordinates.
Philza believed that the mysterious, black substance might be a way to contact the eggs. He decided to leave messages and helpful items to Chayanne and Tallulah, and he placed those things on the black matter, which showed up in his base and near Tallulah's farm. After some one of the golden apples left for the kids was replaced with a potato (Chayanne's favourite crop to farm) and there was also a message with coordinates leading Phil to a pumpkin patch he found for Chayanne. That place was also full of black matter and contained another chest, messages and coordinates, this time being of Tallulah's favourite flower picking spot. In both of those locations, Phil also found static, blurry images of his kids. This made him think, this is how they communicated, and his theory might be correct, but since then, there were no more attempts of contact from those two or any other eggs.
On Day 201, president Forever received a task from Cucurucho on behalf of The Federation to go to the Nether and investigate the black matter. The Federation started getting worried about Quesadilla Island's future because the substance was spreading quickly, and they believed Forever -as the president and a link between this organization and the islanders- was the best person to learn more about the infection, find its source and hopefully stop it. Unfortunately, not long after Forever went to the Nether and met with Walter Bob, he went missing.
Project A0 took place on Day 208. This was an event which included a special meeting held by The Federation with Cucurucho as a host and the federation workers. During this meeting, the agenda was about the Virus and the president's disappearance. The Federation decided to keep trying to study the black matter and find Forever.
The Virus continued to spread and attacked more locations, and causing more rain and thunderstorms. Because of this, The Federation decided Quesadilla Island is no longer safe for its inhabitants and needs to be temporarily closed. They decided to send everyone to a different island, called The Egg Island. It was supposed to be a vacation for the islanders. During their absence, The Federation tried to contain the infection to make the island safe again and then bring the residents back. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned.
On Day 234 The Federation noticed that the virus has spread rapidly and even reached The Federation Headquarters. Cucurucho assigned workers to start cleaning and researching the substance. In the meantime, they discovered it might be toxic, so they issued a warning and wearing safety masks became mandatory. The rapid spread of the infection is also accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms. Every member of The Federation decided to stop the infection by any means and then bring the islanders back.

The workers worked really hard and on Day 239 the island looked so much better. Cucurucho went to check on the progress and was pleased to see the workers managed to remove most of the black matter from public places and federation offices. However, they also looked at the arms of the workers and noticed they look corrupted from having contact and touching black matter for so long despite wearing masks. It is also revealed that some of the workers became very ill and had to be placed in infirmary. The weather was still quite rainy, though.
During Days 245 and 246 Philza and Fit worked hard to remove all the black matter from island residents' private areas. The eggs were rescued by Cucurucho on Day 242, so a day later Dapper reported that they never left the island and mysteriously appeared on Egg Island only a few days before Purgatory Event started. This means, they never went to a different dimension and were not leaving trails of black substance wherever they walked. The true reason and source of the virus is still unknown. However, knowing that the eggs are not connected to the black matter, Fit and Phil decided they don't need to keep the dark substance in their bases. They managed to remove the black matter from most of the private residences and places important for the eggs.
